By the time Tizra came onto the A.A.O.S radar, it was November, and the annual meeting was just a few
months away. Philips was immediately struck by the fit with A.A.O.S requirements. “The first demo
really impressed us,” he says. “Tizra clearly had a lot of the features we were looking for, including the
ability to tie into our AMS, and to support sales through our existing shopping cart. We also liked the
ability to control how the books looked through the platform, and the ability to add supplementary
material to enhance the reading experience.” .
Beating the Deadline.
Having identified a suitable vendor, A.A.O.S quickly completed the selection process, and the challenge
of going live in time for the meeting snapped into focus. “In general, the annual meeting is an
opportune time to show new products,” said Philips, “but it was even more important than usual this
year, because we wanted to show our members we were committed to making the changes needed to
meet our new strategic goals.” .
Tizra had assured A.A.O.S that they could
meet
the
aggressive
schedule. Now
it
was
time
to
deliver. “I
knew from experience and our research that getting up and running that quickly was not going to be
easy,” says Philips.
Tizra’s deployment team was up to the challenge. Within weeks, they completed branding of the Tizra
interfaces so they became a seamless extension of the existing A.A.O.S site, trained A.A.O.S staff so they
could manage their own online publishing on the Tizra platform, and most impressively, completed
single sign-on integration with the A.A.O.S association management software. “The process went much
more smoothly than any of the other integrations we’ve done,” says Philips.
In the end, Philips was able to stand up in front of members at the annual meeting, and show them how
the organization was delivering on its strategic goals with a new eBook site that was so polished it
didn’t look new at all. “I was able to demonstrate the site for our doctors with the same level of
confidence I’d have in a system that was operational for weeks,” said Philips.
Benefits of the Tizra Platform.
Even before they went live, A.A.O.S began seeing how the publication process and customer
experience were enhanced. “I was astounded by the ease of getting content into Tizra,” said Philips. “I
could load a book in a matter of minutes. I was used to eBook conversions taking 2-6 weeks.” .
And the fact that A.A.O.S is
able
to directly control every aspect of the process, from editorial through
online publication, means they can ensure standards of quality that are essential with medical content.
“One of the constraints of a lot of the other of solutions was that they required that you send your
books away somewhere to be converted,” said Philips.
But perhaps the most significant immediate benefit was the level of freedom and support it’s now
possible to provide to the A.A.O.S marketing and sales departments. “We have a relatively new sales
team and they love having the flexibility to offer trial subscriptions to individual and institutional
users,” said Philips. And for marketing, the wide range of business models and promotions that Tizra
supports has been truly liberating. “Moving to the Tizra platform facilitates our marketing team’s
creativity in crafting specific packages or offers. Now, if they can dream it, we can do it,” he said.
Looking Forward.
With the initial launch phase complete, and key titles now live on the Tizra platform, A.A.O.S has shifted
its
focus to adding new content and features, and to the longer term strategic goals that Tizra’s
flexibility will help A.A.O.S achieve.
In addition to unbundling content for inclusion in CME programs, priorities include developing new
interactive
and
rich
media
elements that can be used to enhance the online editions delivered through
Tizra. A.A.O.S is
also
working
with
Tizra
to
add
new
capabilities
like a more secure offline reading
option, online annotation features, and more flexible delivery of A.A.O.S’ substantial archive of XML
content. “Tizra has clearly shown they are a partner we can work with on both short-term and long-
term goals,” concluded Philips.
